Delhi is situated at Hauz Khas in South Delhi, which
is a landmark place in the colourful and chequered
history of Delhi. The campus of the Institute extends
to an area of 320 acres. With many topographical features,
imaginatively laid out with picturesque landscape,
numerous buildings of various nature and stature,
and clean and wide roads, the campus presents a spectacle
of harmony in architecture and natural beauty. |
Young
at thirty years, as universities go, what has lent
strength and energy to Jawaharlal Nehru University
is the vision that ideas are a field for adventure,
experimentation and unceasing quest and diversity
of opinions its chief premise. In the early 1970s,
when JNU opened its doors to teachers and students,
frontier disciplines and new perspectives on old disciplines
were brought to the Indian university system. |
One of the most spectacular pieces
of Mughal Architecture is the Lal Quila or the Red
Fort. Built by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan between
1638 and 1648, the Red Fort has walls extending up
to 2 kilometers in length. |
The Garden Tomb Humayun's tomb lies
on the Mathura road near its crossing with the Lodi
Road. |
Historical Construction of A Landmark
In 1199, Qutub-ud-Din raised the Qutub Minar either
as a victory tower or as a minaret to the adjacent
mosque. From a base of 14.32m it tapers to 2.75m at
a height of 72.5m and a valid reason why it took two
decades to complete this monument.It's a red sandstone tower covered with beautiful and striking carvings and is inscribed with verses from the holy Quran. |
On 31st Jan. 1948, Mahatma
Gandhi's last rites was performed here. The memorial
stone of Gandhi is square in shape made of black stone.
His last ward- 'Hey Ram' is inscribed on it. On every
Friday (the day of his death) a prayer is being held.
Except Monday, a regular feature of projecting Gandhi
philosophy in picture, sculpture and photos from 10-00
to 17-00 is being performed at Rajghat. |
A unique structure raised in 1724,
now lies in the heart of Delhi's commercial centre
near Connaught place. This is the Jantar Mantar, one
of several astronomical observatories raised by Maharaja
Jai Singh II of Jaipur. |
The Purana Quila (Old Fort) stands
on the site where the ancient city of Indraprashtha
is believed to have existed. |
It is located near Safdarjung Airport, Delhi. Its area is 300-Sq-Metre & was built in 1753-54. After the death of Aurangzeb, the only significant structures raised were the Tomb of Safdarjung, who was the prime minister of Delhi under Muhammad Shah. Described as the "last flicker in the lamp of Mughal architecture" it is clearly decadent in style. |
The palatial building built on an
area of 330 acres with a private garden designed by
the illustrious Lutyens, as the official residence
of the Viceroy of India during British reign, is now
the official residence of the First Citizen of India
- its President. |
It was built by Ghiyath-ud-din Tughluq
& was founded in 1321-25. It is historically known
as 'Tughluqabad, Third City of Delhi'. It is located

The Akshardham experience is an enlightening journey through India's glorious art, values and contributions for the progress, happiness and harmony of mankind. The grand, ancient-styled Swaminarayan Akshardham complex was built in only five years through the blessings of HDH Pramukh Swami Maharaj of the Bochasanwasi Shri. Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) and the colossal devotional efforts of 11,000 artisans and BAPS volunteers. The complex was inaugurated on 6 November, 2005. One of the Architectural gift given
by Shah Jahan, Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques
not only in Delhi but in India. Completed in 1658
this Mosque has three gateways, Four angle towers
and two 40 m high minarets. You can enter the mosque
but take precaution to take off your shoes and make
sure that you are properly dressed before entering.
One can also go to the top of minarets. From here
you can have a bird's eye view of Delhi. |
The Bahá'í House of Worship, New
Delhi, India. Completed in 1986, the Bahá'í temple
is set amidst pools and gardens. Adherents of any
faith are free to visit the temple and pray or meditate
silently according to their own religion. The structure
is in shape of a lotus flower, thus it is often referred
to as "lotus temple". The view of the temple is spectacular
before dusk when the temple is floodlit. The Bahá'í
Faith is the youngest of the independent world religions
and believes in the oneness of mankind, the oneness
of God and the oneness of all religions. |
A complex of temples called Chattarpur
mandir is located beyond the Qutab Minar in Mehrauli.
Dedicated to Goddess Durga. Build in South Indian
style the temple complex is spread over a large area
with beautiful lawns and gardens. Though devotees
visit these temples through the year, during the navratras
devotees come from near and far. During the festivals
there are special buses. |
A magnificent and spacious bungalow
in Delhi owned by Raja Jai Singh Amber (Jaipur) who
commanded great respect and honour in the court of
Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb now enjoys the status of
a holy shrine called Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. The eighth
Guru Sri Harkishan had stayed here for a few months
as guest of Raja Jai Singh. Since then it has become
a place of pilgrimage for both, Hindus and Sikhs. |
The tomb of the famous sufi saint
Nizam-ud-din Auliya is built on the way from Humayun's
tomb. Inside the premises of the shrine is a tank
which is surrounded by many other tombs. It is said
that there was a controversy between the rulers of
Tughlakabad and the saint over building this tank.
The saint had said that the city of Tughlakabad will
never flourish and so did it happen. |
This temple was built over a six
year period (1933 - 1939) and was opened by Mahatma
Gandhi. It was built in the 20th century by the Birla
family of industrialists known for its many other
temples in India.The presiding deity here is Lakshmi Narayan (Vishnu). It is also known as the Lakshmi Narayan. |
For many this is just a temple, for
finding solace, peace and quiet. Sitting amongst Lord
Krishna and his devotees with Hare Krishna chants
going around is indeed an experience. But for those
who are seeking more, there is so much to learn and
see, than what meets the eye. ISKCON aims at having
a better understanding among Indians about what was
said in the Gita and Shrimad Bhagwatam .that humans
have been on this earth since the universe came into
existence. |
Near the Police Station, Chandni
Chowk the beautiful golden domes of the Gurudwara
Sisgunj immediately strikes your eye. It commemorates
the site of the ninth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Tegh
Bahadur's martyrdom. The Guru was beheaded by Aurangzeb
1675. The Gurudwara has been extended from time to
time and it tough to tell apart the original structure
anymore. |

National Zoological Park or the Zoo
of Delhi is one of the finest Zoos in Asia & is
situated close to Purana Quila or Old Fort. Established
in 1959 and is spread over a massive area of 214 acres.
Delhi Zoo is home to more than 2000 species of animals
& birds from Africa, America, Australia and Asia.
The Zoo was set up in 1959.
It was designed by Major Weinman of Sri Lanka and
Carl Hagenbeck of West Germany. |
Sir Edwin Lutyens was the designer
behind the building and the gardens. Lutyens' original
idea was to lay down two separate gardens, one for
the Viceroy and the other for the public. However,
he ended up designing the Mughal Garden for Lady Harding.
The gardens comprise three parts: the first is the
'Rectangular Garden' immediately behind the main building.
The second is the 'Long Garden', which leads on to
the third section - the 'Circular Garden'. |

It is situated in Chanakyapuri, Delhi.As the name suggest, Rose garden host a number of rose flowers. The garden has some of the rarest and imported rose variety. The best time to visit this garden is during December / January when the flowers are in full bloom. |
